A deciduous broadleaf tree in the genus Acer of the family Aceraceae with diffuse-porous wood.
Only two species among more than 200 maple trees are useful as timber material, and painted maple is one of them. The strong, hard, and viscoelastic wood has fine and dense wood grain.
The wood surface is smooth and elegant. It is difficult to dry and process, but is a useful material for musical instruments, such as harmonicas, action pieces of pianos, back board and side plates of violins and guitars.
