Hida area is known as its rich natural surroundings such as mountains, water, qualitative food and the vast amount of forest which occupies 93% of the land and of those 70% is natural broad-leave trees. What opportunities are available?

During the residency at FabCafe Hida, a designer/ architect will have an opportunity to utilize Hida’s rich resources for their production and workshops, simultaneously to explore and share their artistic perspectives with local audiences in Hida district. Accommodation and exhibiting location will be available at FabCafe Hida  and some places in Hida city depending on the timing and condition. The network of the master craftmen and other collaborative partners will be accessible through Hidakuma. We make those resources open to designers who meet our requirements stated below.

The aim of this residency is to provide the successful designers/ architects/ creators with the opportunity to focus on their own creation in order to create the innovative products while appreciating the natural resources and engaging with the local community by utilizing the rich timber woods and the traditional master craft men skills, Fab machines and wood-working machines available at FabCafe Hida and our network expanded around the world.

We have a supporter program which gives designers a discounted price to stay at FabCafe Hida. Designers will produce furnitures and wooden materials to contribute to Hidakuma by utilizing the available resources while having their own creation time. Hidakuma will support the designers to meet the promising local talents and organizations, all of which, in effect, would encourage inheriting local tradition to the next generation and maintaining the forest and creating the sustainable environment.
